9 ways to get happy in the next 30 minutes

by Real Simple Magazine, on Fri Apr 10, 2009 7:47am PDT 252

In the next half hour, tackle as many of the following suggestions as possible. Not only will these tasks themselves increase your happiness, but the mere fact that you've achieved some concrete goals will boost your mood.

Jay Gosney
1. Raise your activity level to pump up your energy. If you're on the phone, stand up and pace. Walk to a coworker's office instead of sending an e-mail. Put more energy into your voice. Take a brisk 10-minute walk. Even better...

2. Take a walk outside. Research suggests that light stimulates brain chemicals that improve mood. For an extra boost, get your sunlight first thing in the morning.

3. Reach out. Send an e-mail to a friend you haven't seen in a while, or reach out to someone new. Having close bonds with other people is one of the most important keys to happiness. When you act in a friendly way, not only will others feel more friendly toward you, but you'll also strengthen your feelings of friendliness for other people.

4. Rid yourself of a nagging task. Deal with that insurance problem, purchase something you need, or make that long-postponed appointment with the dentist. Crossing an irksome chore off your to-do list will give you a rush of elation.

5. Create a more serene environment. Outer order contributes to inner peace, so spend some time organizing bills and tackling the piles in the kitchen. A large stack of little tasks can feel overwhelming, but often just a few minutes of work can make a sizable dent. Set the timer for 10 minutes and see what you can do. In that time, take a quick look around the house and see how to get organized using everyday items.

6. Do a good deed. Introduce two people by e-mail, take a minute to pass along useful information, or deliver some gratifying praise. In fact, you can also...

7. Save someone's life. Sign up to be an organ donor, and remember to tell your family about your decision. Do good, feel good―it really works!

8. Act happy. Fake it 'til you feel it. Research shows that even an artificially induced smile boosts your mood. And if you're smiling, other people will perceive you as being friendlier and more approachable. There's no need to walk around in a constant state of worry. After all, what's the worst that can happen if you bounce a check or leave wet clothes in the dryer?

9. Learn something new. Think of a subject that you wish you knew more about and spend 15 minutes on the Internet reading about it, or go to a bookstore and buy a book about it. But be honest! Pick a topic that really interests you, not something you think you "should" or "need to" learn about.

Ah Ma on Holiday

They succeed! Time now is 2.15pm. I just rang home.

Papa told me that Siang just fall asleep (after drink some milk - drink milk?... wow i thought that was very well done!) at 1.45pm - his usual napping hour.

To many, they may felt that what is there so great about giving milk and bringing a toddler to afternoon nap? Well, i think its a great achievement and my heart is full of smile.

Sitting in office now, I feel deeply that Siang has a great papa.

Ah Ma on holiday

Ah ma is on holiday for a week+ from today.

Today hubby toke leave and take care of siang.

10am plus - siang not drinking milk and refuse to let the auntie give him milk too

2pm plus - not yet take his afternn nap. On the phone with me a while, say refuse to nap. refuse milk. refuse to go and rest for a while.

4pm +(just)- Hubby say siang already eat 2 times of mee suan (don't want milk) and 2 times of porridge. I spoke to our domestic helper to ascertain that she had cooked the mee suan correctly.

Poor papa. he never eat anything much for the whole day. I think he must be really tired.

They have really tried their best. At least in turn of siang refuse to drink milk, concern that he may be hungry. Papa decide to cook mee suan for him (small snack does help in filling up toddler tummy - great decision)

I am gg off on the dot today. shall go back and give siang dinner and let both of them take a break.

Getting Early

I like to come into office early. Catch sun rise; breath fresh air? no no and also it does not mean i don't love to laze in my bed for a little while longer.

I love my job (so much?) hehe erh... that is determine by whether i can find time to laze around while on my hot seat haha (how honest can i be)

In my little work corner, i know exactly where are my stuff. this creates confident in me. Phone ring, i am cool. i answer it without casting another doubt

am i in my comfort zone? is this sign that i am in my mid year career crisis? it depends (i think).

why am i blogging all this? my frens, is just a thought that flow by.

maybe cindy is correct. i should try to re-organise my work desk a bit.

haha I know! maybe i should mess it up (yahoo!) why do one have to live in a so well organised life? i would like myself to be ever ready for unexpected happenings but still i won't want too much huha-la to come into my life. how contradicting can i be...haiz (shake my head)

all i want is safe & peace for my family, living in contentment to my expectations.

life - give me my smile.

Headache

I been having lots of episode of headache lately. Today I brought siang to see doctor (he is down with flu - cough and phelgm). I toke this chance and told the doctor about my on-going headache. She diagnose me as having tension headache.

She gave me some relaxation pill. It helps :)

Think i must learn to cope with stress.
